Wentzville Odor Concerns

Updated: 1/5/2020

Starting in October 2020, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources received numerous concerns about moldy/musty/chemical odors in the area southeast of the GM Wentzville Plant. The department’s St. Louis Regional Office conducted multiple investigations of the reported odors. These investigations included conducting area odor surveillance loops, interviewing concerned parties and meeting with GM Wentzville Environmental Health & Safety staff and City of Wentzville Public Works employees to determine the source of the odors.

In November and December 2020, the department conducted an analysis of GM odor concern data and an assessment of GM plant painting operations. It was established that chemical odors were emitted by the plant's painting process; however, the detected odors did not exceed the dilution threshold of 7:1 per state rule 10 CSR 10-6.165 Restriction of Emission of Odors. The department also found that emissions from the painting operations are within the allowable limits specified by the plant'sair permit. It was also determined that musty odors emitted at closer proximity to the GM plant operations are masked by odors that are more typical to manufacturing processes. GM's analysis of paint sludge revealed that the plant's painting processes are potentially a source of musty odors.

On Dec. 21, 2020, GM began cleaning its paint sludge systems, including each paint line's wind tunnels and the on-site sludge pit. This cleaining effort was completed Dec. 31, 2020.

The department continues to investigate this issue. When the odor is present, residents are encouraged to call the department’s St. Louis Regional Office at 314-416-2960, or they can submit concerns online at: dnr.mo.gov/concern.htm. To help with our investigation, please include the date and time of the odor concern, where you detected it and describe the smell: musty, chemical, paint, etc.

Tips for Saving Money and Lowering Air Pollution

Install a programmable thermostat: Cooling and heating your home accounts for almost half of your energy bill – about $1,000 a year.
• Set your thermostat for 78 degrees during summer — or 68 degrees during winter — when you are awake and at home.

Full

• Decide upon a period of eight hours or more each day to set your thermostat 10 − 15 degrees warmer during summer or 10 to 15 degrees cooler during the winter.

Check your heating/cooling filter every month, particularly during winter and summer when the system may run almost constantly. Change the filter every three months or sooner.
Dirty filters slow down air flow, making the system work harder to keep you comfortable.

Air Pollution Control Methods

Turn off unnecessary lights and unused appliances to reduce emissions from power plants and save money. Purchase Energy Star® appliances.

Minimize the amount of gasoline you use.
• Walk, carpool, ride a bicycle and use mass transit.
• Consolidate trips.
• Avoid unnecessary idling. Park instead of using drive-through lanes. Turn off your engine while waiting to drop off or pick up people.

The Los Angeles County Air pollution control officials said on Sunday that it will lift the cremation limit due to the increasing number of COVID-19 deaths.

Los Angeles is the first county in the U.S. that reached more than one million COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began. This also means swelling numbers of hospitalizations and deaths that drained not only the hospitals but also the morgues and funeral homes.

According to the report, the South Coast Air Quality Management District issued the emergency order on Sunday. The executive order lifts the limitations on crematoriums for at least the next 10 days to help the already congested and mortuaries and hospital morgues.

Additionally, the air pollution control agency typically restricts the number of bodies to be cremated allowed every month to protect the air quality in the area.

However, the agency needs to lift its restriction because the capacities of morgues have already exceeded.

Los Angeles Continues to Suffer the Impact of COVID-19

Pollution

For several consecutive days, Los Angeles County continues to suffer the impact of COVID-19. Aside from reaching more than one million cases on Saturday, it has also recorded more than 200 deaths for several days which makes Los Angeles with the highest number of deaths in California.

L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer said in a statement, 'Our community is bearing the brunt of the winter surge, experiencing huge numbers of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, five-times what we experienced over the summer.'

The situation in Los Angeles County is almost similar to the state of affairs in Bergamo, Italy last year, a city just northeast of Milan located in Italy's Lombardy region, which became the epicenter of the nation's and Europe's COVID-19 crisis.

It can be remembered that Giorgio Gori, the mayor of Bergamo, said that the city's crematories can no longer dispose of all the work it has to do because there were so many bodies of those who have died due to the virus. Gori said that the crematory is no longer enough.

This is the reason why Los Angeles County Officials are asking for the fast rollout and vaccination because this will help reduce infections and deaths.
