A bit daft on Smyth's part, turning up for service as an archer without a bow/arrows. Although many men showed up at muster, not everyone was chosen, in fact very few made the cut. The idea that 'peasants' were shoveled into retinues regardless of ability or equipment was clearly not supported by sources. However, Modern bows-strings add more performance to a longbow. The Bow Grip: The Bow Grip is located in the middle of the Bowstave, and this is where the archer grips the bow while shooting. The bow grip may be made of rope, leather or it may be left untouched. The bow grip aids the archer to increase his accuracy and stability.

A peasant archer is armed with a small bow, and a knife. Unreliable, and only moderately effective as archers.

While most peasants in Europe were levied into the army, at sword point if need be, some welcomed the opportunity to earn some pay, and travel. Their bows are designed for hunting rather than war, so are only effective against lightly armoured foes. They carry a knife for protection, but should be kept out of hand to hand combat, and will probably run away if any seems likely.
