At the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, Mt. Carmel Area School District introduced a new plan called School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS). A team of faculty and administration from the district has worked hard over the past year to create a plan and educate our staff on implementing the program. This is a school wide system of supports that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors. The school will benefit by creating a positive environment, which will aid in more successful learning. The school focus is to shift the emphasis from being reactive in addressing behaviors and social skills to being proactive in prevention. We, as a district and school community, will be teaching appropriate behaviors through modeling, teaching, and the use of positive rewards. Students who are caught doing well will be rewarded for such behaviors. This program has a large emphasis on respect and integrity for our students.
. SWPBS is a systematic approach for implementing proactive schoolwide discipline and is currently being implemented in over 7,000 schools in over 37 states.
During the first week of school, all students were taught their expected behaviors in common school settings such as classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, recess, restrooms, dismissal and assemblies.
